If you want a healthy smile, you’ll want a diet rich in whole grains, fiber, fruits and vegetables, calcium, and lean proteins. Make sure you avoid sugary drinks or sticky sweets, which can damage your tooth enamel. Drink plenty of water too! This washes away bacteria from your teeth and gums.
Good oral hygiene and regular care from a general dentist go a long way toward preventing cavities. Brush at least twice a day with a toothpaste that contains fluoride, and see us every six months for an exam and cleaning. It’s also a good idea to limit your consumption of sugary or highly acidic foods and drinks. For added protection against cavities, ask your dental team about treatment with fluoride and/or dental sealants.
A dental sealant is an ultra-thin coating applied to the chewing surfaces of your back teeth. Those surfaces have grooves where bacteria can collect and cause cavities. Sealants create a barrier to keep the bacteria out. Once applied, sealants lessen the risk of decay by about 80 percent. We often suggest applying when the first molars appear, around age 6, then again at around age 12 when second molars come through. Sealants typically provide protection for several years. During exams your dentist will check to ensure they are still in place.
